Understanding the Projections
How We Got These Numbers
The projections above combine the UN World Population Prospects 2024 medium variant (to 2100) with long-range demographic modeling based on fertility convergence theory. Beyond 2100, we assume fertility rates stabilize between 1.3 and 1.7 children per woman globally, with mortality continuing to improve slowly before plateauing.
The uncertainty bands widen over time because small differences in fertility assumptions compound across centuries. A global TFR of 1.5 versus 1.7 produces dramatically different populations by 2500. Both are plausible; neither changes the fundamental trajectory.
The Regional Story
Not all regions decline at the same pace. Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to grow through 2100 before joining the global decline. East Asia and Europe are already shrinking. By 2200, every continent will be in demographic contraction, but the timing and speed vary enormously — with profound geopolitical consequences.

Historical Precedents
The Black Death (1347–1351)
Europe lost 30–50% of its population in four years. The demographic recovery took two centuries. But this was a catastrophic, one-time mortality shock — the exact opposite of what we face. Our decline is slow, structural, and driven by falling births, not rising deaths. The Black Death teaches us that population decline is survivable; it does not teach us how to manage one that lasts a thousand years.
Easter Island
The classic cautionary tale of ecological overshoot: a society that outgrew its resource base and collapsed. But the global story is different. We are not collapsing — we are choosing smaller families. The question is whether we can manage the transition before ecological pressures force a less gentle path.
